Podcast: Matzah, pizza rustica and coconut cake

matza pizza rustica

In this week’s podcast, Domenica Marchetti and Peter Ogburn discuss symbolic foods of the season; namely, Passover matzah and Italian Easter pie (pizza rustica). Turns out there’s matzah and then there’s Vermatzah, small-batch, whole-grain artisan matzah from a bakery in Vermont. Pizza rustica, on the other hand, is about as far from matzah as you can get–a rich, savory torte filled with cheeses and diced cured meats. It’s the dish with which many Italians and Italian-Americans break the Lenten fast. We also take a virtual trip to Charleston, S.C., Peter’s hometown (and Domenica’s new favorite city) for an oyster roast and a slice of the Peninsula Grill’s Ultimate Coconut Cake.

Gosh that was fun. I’d listen all over again to hear Peter Ogburn reveal his Easter dinner entree.

Helen, I agree ~ not traditional, and yet it makes perfect sense. Happy Easter.
