Nearly all the country’s hazelnuts come from Oregon.

It seems Oregon has the perfect climate for hazelnuts. So about 650 families on farms that run the length of the Willamette Valley grow about 99 percent of the U.S. hazelnut crop. The hazelnut – also called a filbert – is the official state nut of Oregon. Hazelnuts are roasted and dipped in chocolate, used as crusts on fresh-caught salmon and tossed into salads with local gorgonzola.
